If I Was Your Girl

Russo, M.
Amanda, born as a boy, faces bullying, betrayal, and violence because she is transgendered. She reunites with her father for a second chance at a different high school, and struggles whether to keep her secret or live her truth, and takes a risk and reveals her past to one of her peers, hoping for acceptance with a new love who has secrets of his own. Suitable for secondary students, the novel could be used for lit circles, and independent or class reads to address the themes of identity, healthy relationships, and human rights, and to develop empathy, insight, and understanding for people who just want to live a “normal” life.
