I'm OK

Kim, P.
OK is a Korean American boy navigating complex issues in his life, such as being part of an immigrant family, moving on after his father’s death, living in poverty, being a victim of racism, and struggling to fit in socially. But although OK’s conflicts are many, he courageously faces each one, engaging readers with humour and insightful observations about himself and others around him. Suitable for a broad audience of middle graders, this easy-to-read story will invite students to explore various timely themes as they follow OK’s journey from feeling guilt and anger to acceptance and love. The theme of self-identity can be broached in the classroom by using this novel as a whole-class novel study or in literature circles, encouraging students to consider family history, identity, the immigrant experience, and friendship.
