Innocent Heroes

Brouwer, S.
During the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the fictional Storming Normans troop is part of the Canadian military fighting against Germany in World War I. The troop is assisted by a variety of animals that actually helped soldiers during the War, including a donkey, cat, pigeon, mule, horse, and tiger, and parts are written from the animals’ perspectives. This blend of fiction and non-fiction provides students with first-hand details of the life of the Canadian soldiers and their relationships with their animal helpers. Useful for study of World War I, the role of heroes, and to demonstrate how history can be used as a basis for fiction. Photographs from World War I illustrate the book.
