Invention of Sophie Carter, The

Hastings, S.
Identical twins Sophie and Mariah were orphaned when young and grew up in foster care and poverty in Victorian England. At age 16 their lives change when they contact a wealthy aunt in London who invites Sophie for a visit to London so she can find her a suitable husband, but Mariah is not invited so the twins deceive their aunt and take turns living as Sophie. The two very different girls – one wanting to be an inventor and one wanting to settle down and start a family – learn a lot about themselves and each other on this adventure. This engaging novel is suitable for an independent or class novel and explores sisterhood, relationships, female gender roles, and the class system.
