Babbitt tells tales-within-tales with this book, with Jack as the rather gentle pirate enthusiast, who regales his boarding house friends with stories of the adventures he has witnessed.The book provides a good counter point to traditional pirate stories; though Jack clearly loved pirate life, he seemed not to play an active part within it.
