She is a pre-teen orphan who disguises herself as a boy which gives her much freedom to search for her brothers. Hearing of a gold strike in B.C.'s Cariboo region, Jo is eager to see for herself. She encourages her friend Bart to sign on with Mr. Emerson, the unpleasant owner of a mining company, who needs workers to carry his supplies to the gold fields. In the end, Jo reveals herself.
