5th grade Krista is a tomboy, a Korean-Canadian, and a cultural minority at her school, but when she’s with her friend Jason, life is good. When her class begins a heritage project, Krista needs to learn about her culture and requires the help of her traditional grandmother who wants Krista to become more feminine like her sister, so to please her Krista dresses like her sister, becomes part of a girl group, and finds her relationship with Jason in peril. This engaging coming-of-age story for grades 4-7 explores issues tweens face, including being true to oneself, embracing one’s culture, navigating relationships, friendship, challenges of being a tween, social awareness, and identity.
