Land of Os, The: John Ramsay

Robertson, D.A.
When a class is on a canoe trip, they encounter an elderly Aboriginal woman who tells them about her grandfather, John Ramsay, a member of the Sandy Bar community on Lake Winnipeg. Despite the government giving his land to new immigrants, Ramsay helped the settlers survive the cold winters, hunger, and smallpox. This Canadian graphic novel has engaging, well-drawn graphics, and demonstrates the conflict and resolution between the Aboriginal peoples and the settlers. Useful for literature circles or guided reading groups, to support study of Aboriginal culture and history, and as a starting point for further research.
