Letters to the Lost

Kemmerer, B.
High school senior Juliet leaves letters on her mother's grave and Declan, also a senior, reads a letter and writes back which begins a written relationship between them as they discuss their losses and dealing with grief. They don’t realize they go to school together and in person have a rather hostile relationship, and as the anonymous relationship helps them grow closer they grow farther apart in person and when Declan discovers Juliet’s identity he struggles with whether to tell her the truth. Told from the two characters’ perspectives, the novel deals with topics engaging to students today, including social media, communication, stereotypes, first impressions, grief, self-harm, and suicide.
