Librarian Of Auschwitz, The
When fourteen-year-old Dita and her family are sent to the family camp at Auschwitz, she becomes the school librarian and, at great risk to herself, she cares for a small collection of eight tattered books and hides them from the guards. Her courageous actions inspire others and help the prisoners bond as they cope with the fear of being sent to the gas chambers. Based on the life of Auschwitz survivor Dita Kraus, this novel for grades 11-12 illustrates many of the tragedies of the Holocaust, and deals with issues of unity, family, acceptance, and justice. The serious nature of the book may require teacher support and supplemental, differentiated learning about the Holocaust.
