Lift

Lê, M.; Santat, D.
It’s Iris’s job to push the elevator buttons, and it is a task that she takes seriously. But one day, one of her younger siblings learns to press the button. Her jealousy and anger transport her to other worlds—magical, make-believe worlds where she escapes, learns, and grows—eventually returning to reality where she can come to terms with her feelings. A picture book that combines with elements of a graphic novel, this story is suitable for a primary audience, and young readers may be encouraged to discuss times when they have felt similarly to Iris. Students may also be encouraged to create picture books in the same graphic-novel format as this story, imagining where a magical lift could take them and all the adventures they could have.
