Listening for Lions

Whelan, Gloria
Set in 1919 in British East Africa, now Kenya, 13-year-old Rachel becomes an orphan when her missionary parents die in an influenza epidemic. Rachel’s devious neighbours manipulate the girl into impersonating their dead daughter, Valerie, and travelling to England to persuade Valerie’s sick grandfather to include them in his inheritance. In England, Rachel and her ‘grandfather’ develop a very special relationship, and Rachel is faced with the dilemma of whether to reveal the truth.
