Little Fires Everywhere
In the1990s, Elena Richardson and her family live in a designed “progressive” suburb, but when single mom Mia, a mysterious artist, moves in, her independent spirit challenges the rigid order of the neighbourhood. When Elena’s friends attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, Mia recognizes she’s the daughter of her co-worker, and the custody battle divides the town, including Elena and Mia, and Elena becomes obsessed with uncovering Mia’s secret, at a very high cost to her and her family. This well-written, thrilling story is suitable for a literature circle, class, or individual novel, and explores community identity, social conformity, family relationships, race, and poverty.
