Lord of the Nutcracker Men, The

Lawrence, Iain
This beautifully-written story of World War I is told from the perspective of a young boy who is evacuated to the English countryside when his father enlists in the Allied Forces. Letters from his father give an honest depiction of the ugliness of trench warfare. The terror of war through the little boy’s eyes is particularly poignant and allows ample opportunities for rich discussion.
Some pre-teaching of history of the Great War will enhance students’ appreciation of the story.
