Lovely War

This blend of historical fiction, romance, and mythology follows the lives of four young adults– two solders and two volunteers— who become couples during World War I and the challenges they face during the War. Their story is told by a number of Greek gods who discuss their own problems and use the stories of the lovers as a backdrop to their stories. This accessible and engaging novel for grades 8-12 can be used as a class or literature circle novel, to support study of World War I and Greek mythology, and explore the trauma of soldiers, discrimination of African American soldiers, and roles of women during the War.
