This is a story of grit, determination and personal growth that illustrates the hardships, struggles and wretched working conditions for factory girls in Lowell, Massachusetts during the mid-1800s. Lyddie's family is ripped apart when her mother falls ill and her father abandons them. Determined to pay off the family debt and reclaim the farm, Lyddie works relentless hours in the factories. She sinks into reading as a way to escape the harsh realities of her life.
