Eleven-year-old Margit and her pregnant mother are a few of the Jewish people who are given refuge from the Nazi regime in Canada in 1944. Margit struggles with learning a new language and making new friends, while missing her father who the Nazis have taken. She witnessed anti-Semitism in Czechoslovakia and wonders why she still encounters it even in Canada. The joy of a new baby renews their optimism and gives Margit new responsibilities. Her father will join them soon for a happy ending.
