The Marvellers

Clayton, D.
Ella is the first Conjuror ever to attend the Arcanum Training Institute, a school that was once segregated and only open to Marvellers. Not all are happy about the integration of the two groups, and Ella faces discrimination and hate. In this fantasy novel with authentic connections to real-life cultures and communities, Ella must make new friends and navigate discrimination while discovering the secrets and mysteries concealed within the community. In an intermediate classroom, readers can be invited to make connections between the prejudice in the book and real life, and they may be able to understand the reasons behind the characters’ thoughts and actions. Teachers may choose to highlight the theme of how one person can bring others together to make a difference, as the book lends itself well to narrative writing activities and class discussions in literature circles, book clubs, or a class novel study.
