Mask that Sang, The
Twelve-year-old Cass and mother Denise have had to struggle to survive on their own, but when Denise inherits her long-lost mother’s home, the two begin a journey of discovery and healing. Cass finds a mysterious Indigenous mask in the house that changes her life as she makes new friends at school and discovers the truth about her family history, her Cayuga heritage, her mother’s relationship with her mother, and her grandmother’s life. This engaging story deals with issues of residential schools, racism, bullying, family dynamics, and discrimination in a way that is suitable for grades 4-5 and can be used for read-aloud, independent reading, or literature circles.
