Mayann's Train Ride

Francis, M.
Young Mayann embarks on an exciting adventure with her family one summer, where she takes a train from Cape Breton to New York, visiting Montreal along the way. But when her favourite purse goes missing, she is heartbroken. However, the loss helps Mayann learn to appreciate the family holiday and how special it is. Suitable as a read-aloud in a primary classroom or a literature circle, the story’s young Black female protagonist may help teachers segue into an exploration of point of view, particularly from the perspective of a character of colour. The images may inspire discussions about what life may have been like in the past, and specifically, what life may have been like in Canada for a family of colour.
