The Me I Choose to Be

This picture book uses lyrical text and rich language to invoke the human spirit across many perspectives. The power of potential is limitless for the Black and brown children highlighted in this book. In a Grade 5–6 classroom, teachers may use the resource to show how the realities of daily life can affect us in many ways and how they can affect our lived experiences. Students may be prompted to share their own experiences with each other, which may segue into reflective writing activities that could also be illustrated via representative artwork.
