Megabat
Daniel has recently moved from Toronto to a new house, he misses his friends and his school, feels very lonely, and to top it off, the house is haunted as puddles mysteriously appear in his bedroom. Daniel discovers that the puddles are tears from Megabat, a fruit bat accidentally shipped to Canada on a papaya. The two become great friends and Daniel plans to get Megabat back home, but when the plan goes awry Megabat accepts it gracefully as he has fallen in love with a pigeon. This lighthearted chapter book for grades 2-5 would be a useful read-aloud to discuss themes of friendship, life changes, and adjusting to a new home, and is also suitable simply as a funny story to share and for independent reading.
