Milk

This powerful film focuses on the life of gay activist Harvey Milk, and the rise of the gay liberation movement in the U.S. It documents the rise of a social movement, what it takes to sustain it, how it changes to meet adversity and homophobia, and how it is not destroyed by the death of its leader. The use of original footage, alongside re-enacted footage, gives the film great impact. The film should be previewed by educators before viewing it with a class, and educators might consider showing specific scenes of the film. The social considerations support the theme of social justice and civil rights and will be useful for senior grades.
