This book, the second in a series, sees Anna still longing for a chance to explore the world. When she is finally allowed to sail around her island to visit other communities, she discovers a village where discouragement and poverty rule the lives of the people. As she struggles to understand the causes of their difficulties, she finds her own ways of helping them. The novel discusses serious issues such as poverty, child abandonment and gambling.
