My Beautiful Birds

del Rizzo, S.
Young Sami and his family flee their war-torn home, leaving his beloved pigeons behind, and make their way to a refugee camp and try to rebuild their lives. But Sami can't forget what was left behind and can't join in with play and school, until the day he is visited by four birds and his emotional healing begins. Suitable for K-3 classrooms, it reflects the experiences of Syrian refugees and other people displaced as a result of civil war, drought, famine, or intolerance in a respectful, age-appropriate manner and can initiate discussions around family, change, needs and wants, and rights and responsibilities of individuals globally. Based on a true story.
