This collection of essays, by First Nations’ author Lee Maracle, focuses on a variety of issues affecting indigenous people in Canada, including residential schools, appropriation/authenticity, colonialism, racism, and feminism. Maracle presents her opinions and ideas in a forthright manner, based on her own experience as well as the experience of First Nations communities throughout Canada. Useful in grade 9-12 classes to accompany the study of specific issues, to spark debate and discussion of those issues, and to encourage further reading on the issues. Teacher preview and pre-teaching required to introduce the historical and political background to the topics presented.
