This Is Not A Love Letter

Purcell, K.
When Chris, an African-American boy and star baseball player, goes missing while out for a run many theories develop: perhaps he killed himself, was a victim of a hate crime, or ran back to his home in New York. Told from the perspective of his girlfriend Jessie, the novel provides a glimpse into the lives of those left behind and the lengths they will take to find the truth. Loosely based on the disappearance of a teenager in Prince George who was later found dead, the book deals with serious issues of mental illness, suicide, and racism. While suitable as a class or literature circle novel for senior students, the level of profanity and sexual content preclude it from being used as a read-aloud.
