One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich

Alexander Solzhenitsyn
This short novel offers great detail as it describes an entire day in the life of Ivan Denisovich, a prisoner in the Soviet Gulag system. By reading the novel one is able to experience the harshness, cruelty, regimentation and fight for survival of those placed in these prisons, who were often there (as in Ivan’s case) for no more than being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
