One Dog and His Boy

Ibbotson, E.
Hal's affluent, materialistic parents buy him everything except what he really wants – a dog. Instead, they rent a dog, but when it is returned, Hal breaks into the rental agency, seizes the dog, and, accompanied by Pippa who works at the agency and the remaining rental dogs, makes a run for his grandparents' home many miles away. Each dog's point of view, determined by its breed, is clearly portrayed. This witty adventure novel for grades 3-6 is suitable as a class read-aloud and discussion of materialism, human-pet bonds, loneliness, friendship, safety, core values, animal welfare, loyalty, neglect, and family dynamics.
