One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Ken Kesey
This is Kesey’s classic 1960s novel about Randal McMurphy, a “boisterous, brawling fun-loving rebel” who chooses to be committed to a mental hospital to avoid jail time for a series of crimes, most of which involve assault. McMurphy’s vitality and boldness in the face of opposition – mainly in the form of Head Nurse Ratched – encourage many of the residents to become more confident in themselves. However, what begins as a playful challenge soon becomes a grim battle.
