One For the Murphys
After eighth-grader Carley and her mother are hospitalized after being severely beaten by her stepfather she is placed in foster care with the Murphy family. Carley struggles to adjust to her new life with such a kind, loving mother, foster brothers, and fit in to a new school, but she eventually makes a friend, connects with the boys, and struggles with the thought of having to return to her mother. When that time arrives, Carley recognizes the Murphys have brought out the best in her and their love will help her throughout her life. Suitable for class read-aloud, literature circles, and to facilitate discussions about foster care, diverse families, self-esteem, self-discovery, and overcoming adversity.
