One Plastic Bag: Isatou Ceesay and the Recycling Women of the Gambia

Paul, M.
This informative picture book traces the journey of Isatou Ceesay and four women in Gambia when they are distressed by the ugliness and negative impact of the plastic trash in their community. They decide to take action despite being ridiculed and having minimal resources, but their creativity and hard work for over a decade results in a much-reduced rubbish pile and their community becoming beautiful once again. This inspirational story, suitable for K-5, can be an effective read-aloud to spark discussion of problem-solving, environmentalism, teamwork, and how a small grassroots movement can effect change in a community. Vivid collages support and develop ideas presented in the text.
