Open Secrets

Open Secrets opens a window to a side of World War II that is often ignored – the treatment of homosexual military personnel. This frank video explores the policies of Canada’s military towards homosexuals through interviews with a number of gay veterans. Students will gain an appreciation for the difficulties these veterans experienced as they served their country, all the while having to keep their sexual orientation a secret, facing personal fallout, punishment, or discharge if exposed. Useful for Social Studies 11, Law 12, and Social Justice 12, teachers are advised to preview the video prior to using in the classroom.
