Orange for the Sunsets

Twelve-year-olds Asha and Yesofu are best friends despite their differences: Asha is a privileged Indian Ugandan and Yesofu is an African Ugandan whose mother works for Asha’s family. Their friendship is tested when Idi Amin decrees that Indians must leave the country and they consider their personal situations during this tumultuous, violent time. This timely story, told from both children’s perspectives, provides insight into the complexity of the Ugandan conflict. Suitable for literature circles and school/classroom libraries, it examines systemic injustice, race relations, conflict, ethical governance, citizenship, immigration, and the impacts of colonialism.
