Written in free verse, this engaging story depicts the struggles of a people's need to maintain their humanity in times of crushing poverty amidst the harsh consequences of short-sighted farming practices. These conditions placed a toll on relationships and people's perceptions of themselves while they tried to maintain the normal patterns of civilized life.
