Pirate Princess

Bardhan-Quallen, S.
Princess Bea dreams of being a pirate instead of a princess. When Captain Jack invites her aboard his pirate ship, the princess soon realizes that pirating is not what she imagined—in particular since she is ordered to swab the decks or cook for the pirates instead of searching for gold. But Princess Bea is determined to prove that she can be just as good a buccaneer as any of them, and eventually gains her status as one of the crew. “Pirate Princess” is suitable for the primary classroom, and the rhymes that make up the narrative allow the book to lend itself well in a poetry unit. It is appropriate for initiating discussions with students about stereotypes, self-discovery, and working for what you believe in. Students will be prompted to ask themselves what they would be if they could be anything in the world.
