Planet Omar: Accidental Trouble Magnet
Omar is a trouble magnet, and he knows it. He is imaginative and a little mischievous, and he navigates life with an annoying sister, an intimidating new school, and a bully—all with humour and whimsy. When his family is the target of racism because of their Muslim beliefs, they must deal with prejudice, discrimination, and stereotyping. They do so in a way that illuminates their kindness and integrity. Suitable for a primary to middle-grade audience, this story lends itself well for a classroom read-aloud, providing opportunities for class discussions around the many issues Omar and his family face. This novel would also be appropriate for a literature circle or independent reading in a classroom or school library, and its themes of inclusion and celebrating differences mix with humorous antics and the challenges of childhood to allow students to broaden their understanding and insight.
