Purple Hibiscus

Adichie, Chimamanda Ngozi
This is a coming-of-age story set in Nigeria in the mid-1990s, told through the eyes of a fifteen year old girl. Her father is a pillar of the church, wealthy, and respected; however, he terrorizes his family, to the point of ostracizing all of them. In the midst of this, the narrator does grow from a shadow of a person to an independent and self-reliant young woman as, her university-professor aunt takes her and her brother under her wing.
