Rating of Perceived Exertion

Jespersen, M
This colourful laminated chart (24” x 36”) presents, for levels of workout intensity, the zone, performance level, exertion level, examples of activity, heart rate, and talk test on a 0 to 10 point scale. The resource meets the goals of the 8-12 Physical Education curriculum and is visually appealing and easy to read. It could be hung in a gym or weight room as a reference resource for students. The poster does not, however, indicate how students calculate their maximum heart rate. Consequently, teachers will need to work with students to calculate maximum heart rate prior to referring to the poster. Heart rates listed on the poster are based on an 'average' person, who has not been defined, and the maximum heart rates listed are more appropriate for adults.
