Red Berries, White Clouds, Blue Sky
During WWII, Tomi's father, a Japanese-American, is falsely accused of spying and imprisoned, while the rest of the family is sent to an internment camp. When father is released from prison he is bitter, no longer proud to be American, and shocked to find his once subservient wife now expects to have a voice at home. Tomi leads the way to rekindling their love of country and the Japanese value of looking forward with hope instead of anger. The novel, suitable for grades 4-7, introduces topics of injustice, bitterness, apathy, cultural identity, hope, changing roles, and power balance in families, cultures, and societies.
