Rethinking Normal: A Memoir in Transition

Hill, K.R.
Katie Rain Hill is starting college and dealing with the anxieties and relationships attendant with this stage in her life. As she details her backstory we learn that she was born “Luke” but from an early age knew her body was not quite right and at the age of 15 began transitioning to become Katie. Her memoir explains the process she underwent to develop her identity and the conflicts and challenges she faced. This genuine and engaging resource can be used in a literature circle, as a read-aloud for whole-class discussion, or as a supplemental inquiry text related to themes of diversity, inclusion, identity, or SOGI issues. Teacher facilitation recommended to ensure students process the content and respond comfortably and respectfully.
