Rules for Stealing Stars

Silly and her older sisters have difficult lives as they must deal with an alcoholic and abusive mother and a father who ignores what is happening. When the family moves into the mother’s childhood home the girls discover that they have magical closets that will transport them to faraway places and help them escape from the issues they are dealing with every day. This engaging novel for grades 5-8 is suitable for read-aloud, a literature circle, or to encourage discussion of many issues raised that students may be facing, including substance abuse, mental illness, neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse, and disrespectful and unkind parents.
