Sable

Hesse, Karen
Tate, the narrator, describes her struggle to keep a stray dog. Her mother is very reserved in character and also very fearful of dogs. When the dog, Sable, causes trouble, it has to go. Tate’s dad does not want his daughter to become a carpenter like he is, yet Tate is drawn to his work. When she builds a wooden fence on her own in order to win back her dog, her dad begins to accept Tate as an apprentice.
