Schwab, V.
In a world where humans and monsters have divided the city of Verity, Kate works to deny her humanity as she tries to prove to her father she is as tough and ruthless as he is so she can leave boarding school and move back to Verity, while August, a monster, is trying hard to prove his humanity and deny his need for human souls. Ironically, August saves Kate and Kate helps August find his humanity. This fast-paced dystopian novel for grades 9-12 deals with the concepts of identity and that all is not what it seems and lends itself to an independent novel study to analyze literary topics or as a launching point for creative writing. Social considerations noted; teacher preview recommended.
