Saving Savannah

Bolden, T.
Seventeen-year-old Savannah, from an upper-class African-American family, is approaching adulthood during the tumultuous early 1900s and when she is exposed to the real life of poor African-Americans and the working class she becomes uncomfortable with her advantaged life. Savannah learns about the suffragette and socialist movements and as she tries to find ways to fight for social change she witnesses violence breaking out around her and her family. This engaging book could be used as a novel study or literature circle choice to focus on civil rights movements, immigration, peaceful versus violent protests, and human rights activism.
