When Natalie’s science teacher proposes a year-long research project on a question of their choice, she isn’t interested as her home life is complicated as her mother suffers from depression and Natalie is trying to deal with their new relationship. But, when her teacher recommends a science competition, Natalie decides to enter as the cash prize will help her take her mother to a place where she can be “fixed” and learn to love life again, so with her friends they explore the question of how one can grow a miracle. This novel for grades 5-10 deals with complex issues of social and mental health at an age-appropriate level and is suitable for a small group, independent, or class novel.
