Seeds

Soutar, A.
Seeds is a Canadian play, based on interviews, court transcripts, scientific explanations, and newspaper articles, that examines the Schmeiser v. Monsanto court case. The conflict sets Monstanto, a large, multi-national corporation, against Schmeiser, a simple farmer, when he refuses to pay Monsanto for the presence of its patented GMO seeds on his property. Best used as a read-aloud play for senior grades, it touches upon many ethical and legal dilemmas around GMOs and the rights of corporations without preaching or explicitly taking a side, which leaves plenty of room for critical thinking and students forming their own opinions.
