Shame

Sanghera, J.
When sixteen year old Jas is told she must marry a man in India she has never met, she refuses and is locked in her home until she relents. Once free she runs away with her boyfriend, is disowned by her family, and the two create a life together and have a child, but the relationship fails and Jas must pick up the pieces and start anew, wishing that she could be a part of her family and get the education she always wanted. This autobiography, for gr. 11-12, could initiate research on forced marriages, gender preference, and honour killings, and discussions of overcoming adversity and believing in oneself. Jas founded Karma Nirvana, a charity working to end forced marriage.
