This novel, a John Newberry Medal recipient, presents the powerful relationship that exists between a boy and “his” dog, Shiloh. Marty is eleven and the oldest of three children who live on the outskirts of a small town in West Virginia. The family works hard to make a living and any “extras” are sent to support Grandma. The story describes all that Marty and Shiloh endure and sacrifice to be together.
