Shot at Normal, A

Reichardt, M.
Juniper Jade struggles with her parents' decision not to get her vaccinated, which is particularly difficult to come to terms with after she contracts the measles, resulting in the death of an infant. She embarks on a difficult journey to get vaccinated that involves making a decision that may damage her relationship with her loving parents. This timely theme may lend itself well to Physical Health and Education classes, allowing students to explore Juniper’s arguments for vaccination, while also considering her parents’ against it. In a Grade 9–10 classroom, the novel may be a literature circle choice with themes around independence, agency, and social justice.
